Advent Series week 1

What if You Said Yes? {Advent Week 1}

Will you join me every Monday for the next four weeks here on the blog? I’m so excited to explore the lives of four different people in the Advent story and what they reveal to us about living with the heart of an everyday {advent}urer and celebrating Advent everyday of the year!

You can read the introduction to the series here.

She stood in disbelief. The more she pondered…the angel…the invitation…the news...the more her knees began to shake. She had to kneel. A fitting position for such a moment in her life.

She wept quietly, not sure how to take it all in or even what to do next.

She knew God existed. She had learned about Him all her life, studying and carefully observing His word. But this…this was beyond anything she had ever learned in a book or from a teacher.

Her mind tried to unravel the experience, but to no avail. All the questions and mystery and absolute absurdity. It was overwhelming her. The fear and doubt thickening like a dark fog around her.

Surprisingly all her words and worries began to transform into prayers as her heart began to fill in the gaps that her mind could not make sense of. A small but welcomed miracle.

How could it be? She searched for more clarity and answers.

The tears slowly began to subside. Instead of clarity she received calmness. The shaking slowed so that she could get up off the floor. And although her heart was still racing to another rhythm, she knew…

She knew like she had never known anything before, what she had to do next.

Mary stopped and took a moment to remember.

She remembered His story… Her God, through all the generations past. His character. His faithfulness. His promises. His compassion.

Then she remembered her story… A child of God. A daughter.

But never in her wildest dreams did she think her story and His story would collide in such a dramatic way!

She couldn’t get His words out of her head, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you! God has decided to bless you!” {Luke 1:28, 30}

Was this really happening? Was God inviting her to take part in this grand adventure of His kingdom?

If she was honest with herself, she didn’t know completely. It all felt mysterious. Unknown. Dangerous. For days she wrestled with the revelation, with the visit from the angel, with the crazy news.

But as she began to remember- who He was and who she was…she felt that she must accept the mystery, welcome the unknown, and embrace possible danger.

“I am the Lord’s servant, and I am willing to accept whatever He wants. May everything you have said come true.” She reflected on the words she had so hastily spoken in response to God’s invitation. She had definitely spoken them in shock.

But today was different. She repeated those words slowly and in full confidence because today she chose to remember…

“I am the Lord’s servant. I am willing to accept whatever He wants. May everything you have said come true.”

A new season was dawning on the earth…advent. It made her shudder and smile all at once.

Never did she imagine that advent would be birthed in her soul and through her very body.

And so, with two hands on her still small belly, with danger and doubt lurking in the darkness, she was ready to say YES.

Yes to the advent…the adventure of knowing Him face to face, walking in her identity as His chosen one, giving Him permission to live within her very being.

Little did she know a proposal of marriage from Joseph wouldn’t be her only invitation these past few months.

God was proposing to her.

A song of adventure began to rise up from her soul, its melody rippling across the whole earth…

“For he, the Mighy One, is holy,

and he has done great things for me.

His mercy goes on from generation to generation, to all who fear Him.

His mighty arm does tremendous things!

He has satisfied the hungry with good things…

{Luke 1:49-53}
