If Today Is A Flop (Here’s What To Do)

If it’s only mid-afternoon but you feel done, distracted and distraught- it’s okay.

Close the screen.

Put down the book.

Leave the office.

Walk out the front door.

Head outside.

Turn around and go home.

Whatever you need to do to shut down and call it quits, do that.

You’re not a failure. You haven’t lost your mind. You aren’t depressed. You aren’t lazy. (I promise! If you don’t believe me read the book, Laziness Doesn’t Exist!)

Yes, I’m inviting us to quit the day. Check out early. Stop the obsession with overcoming the obstacles in your way.

Surrender to procrastination. Give into the feeling of defeat. Ride the waves of discouragement. You are merely having a moment. You needn’t panic. You need to reset and regroup.

Again, that’s okay.

We all need more days when we let the white space envelop us, and we relax into our natural need to be, to simply exist with our miraculous lungs and our overwhelming capacity to love and lust and long. Days where we let raw joy hunker down into our stardust cells as we stare up into the clouds while munching on a perfectly ripe and crunchy apple.

The pull to be productive paves a long straight (and boring!) path, yet we were made to meander through a more winding, wild, and unconventional way.

We don’t actually thrive when we measure our worth by how much we achieve between dawn and dusk. We clamor and clang for more people to subscribe, join, and rejoice in our branded newsletter or take notice of our sparkly business idea. Why do we actively continue to make every hour a performance as if we were forced to sprint to some arbitrary finish line?

Breathless and fumbling we never really arrive or find our footing.

You are at your very best when you don’t demand visible results to come from today, idolize self-improvement, or obsess over your next breakthrough.

Stop, start, stop, start is how the rhythm sounds, a totally normal human experience.

If you have a bit of whiplash don’t try to whip yourself into action and accomplish something great, instead embrace the whimsical nature of this erratic and enchanted life of yours.

If today is a flop, then congratulations! You have the makings for a fantastic celebration! Now, you are free to follow your loves, take joy in your favorite things, and finally unwrap the surprises of your aliveness.

“Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.”
