I felt the rearranging, putting together, clearing out, and letting go all at the same time. A spring cleaning of the soul was happening beneath my tightened smile.
Everything from my work, values, and routines, to my identity, passions, and dreams was out on the table, ready to be dusted off in the light of His grace and truth.
Of course, my tendency always is to try and cut these spring cleaning sessions short. Be it in my home or my soul, I’d rather throw everything back into the corners where it came from.
But God rarely works conveniently within the squares of our calendar.
I’m caught off guard by His timing and He likes it that way. The Holy Spirit often shows up spontaneously, unannounced, to get my attention.
When there’s a subterranean movement happening within us, we must take heed and practice listening to the stirrings below.
There’s a purging, a preparation that happens when God is wanting us to travel with Him into previously unknown places of His heart and ours.
He’s making space for a new season to unfold within us.
He is pulling out our treasured possessions and taking down what’s hidden from their high places or dark closets. I get the impression of Him dusting off shelves, vacuuming corners, scrubbing counters, and giving away my old clothes.
On the inside, I’m freaking out because I don’t understand, and I’ve never been friends with change. What is going on in me? Why does my soul feel so messy? Why is this laying here? What is that doing out in the open? No, don’t move it. Please, put that back, I like it there.
I resist the sorting and sifting of my precious pieces and parts. I’d rather quickly clean up, stuff things away, and get on with life as usual.
But He continues. God is inviting me into places I’ve never considered and introducing me to opportunities I’ve only imagined. There’s no going back, if I let Him come in.
Might I suggest we can expect and look forward to these regular spring cleaning sessions with the Lord, instead of feeling ashamed, confused, or interrupted by them. Let’s start to notice the tell-tale signs of His Spirit knocking at the door even when we’re busy with a project or working on our plans.
Pencil in these supernatural visits onto the pages of your days when they happen- honoring them as you would an actual event you wouldn’t want to miss.
Be present in these times, indulging in the deeper realities of His kingdom in and around you, and giving Him permission to talk with you while you prepare breakfast, tend to the garden, teach your kids to read, check the mail, or take a shower.
Perfectly timed on His part, God is desiring to guide us out of the usual and predictable patterns of life as we’ve known it and redefine beauty and adventure for us in the coming season.
The winds of His Spirit are gently and freely blowing now, do you feel it? When I sense the tremors of transformation, like I do lately, here are a few things I try to remember:
Don’t rush His work. These times are meant to be sweet and intimate, not hurried. Humbly receive His care and concern for the tiniest details of your life.
Notice what’s painful. Are there specific points where it hurts to touch? What are you wishing He wouldn’t see or talk about? Tell him, when you’re ready.
Like a curious explorer, document His voice all throughout your day. Keep a notebook open on the counter or beside your bed. What obscure whispers are you hearing from Him? Are there scriptures or quotes that seem to spark you with a bolt of life? Are their specific words or images coming up from the past? Out of the scribbles will emerge a theme He wants you to linger on.
Observe what He’s doing. Don’t try to jump in and put everything back to the way it was. Quiet down and simply practice sitting with Him. Hold back your critique and questions right now…there will be time for that later.
Don’t worry about them. We all enter into specific seasons with God at different times. If we look behind us, in front of us, or even beside us, rather than at Him, our gait will follow our gaze and we’ll soon find ourselves wandering off before He’s finished with His work in the home of our heart.
Be excited for the coming scenery. Whenever God is messing around inside of us, we can be confident more beauty is about to unfold. Like an episode of Fixer Upper, prepare to be wowed and teary-eyed by His work. He’s taking our rundown parts and replenishing them. He is revisiting hurts and continuing to restore. He is revealing to us the hidden treasures of our own soul, that we had forgotten were even there.
Take heart, sweet sister. If you are feeling in an awkward space…if your soul seems suddenly and surprisingly untidy…if you’re confused about what’s happening in your life, perhaps, it’s not you… it’s Him.
Listen, put your ear up to the stirrings below the surface. You can even jot down”spring cleaning” with Jesus on the calendar if it helps you remember to stay put, in a posture of openness, instead of plotting your escape plans.
