Practicing the Art of Adventure :: Kristin Conklin

What does it look like to practice the art of adventure?

On Fridays we feature a woman who is Practicing the Art of Adventure in her daily life-stepping into the unknown, embracing change, trusting God, leaving fear, and loving extravagantly, all the while, traveling deeper into His heart. It is our desire that through their lives and stories of adventure you will be inspired & challenged to say YES to God’s invitation to follow Him. No matter what season of life you find yourself in, may you see that everyday is an opportunity to practice the art of adventure as you abide with Jesus.

We’d love for you to join us here each week!

So…what adventures is God leading you into?

Today, I’m excited for you to meet Kristin! She shares some of her story with us today, and I know you will be able to connect with her struggles and feelings she’s experienced along the way. I wish we could all sit on a couch together and talk, but this will have to do…so sneak away fit a minute and join us as we get to know Kristin!

In this interview Kristin reveals one of her most recent steps out of her comfort zone, how her and her husband are trusting God right now, and two ways she battles fear in her life! Also, be sure you read to the end for a coupon to use in her shop + enter our giveaway!

First, introduce yourself {tell us where you are from, your favorite place to go or favorite thing to do, and what a “normal” day looks like for you!}

Hi! My name is Kristin.  I’ve been married to my husband Nick for 5 years.  We reside in North Carolina.  By day, I’m a research analyst for a software company and by night I enjoy working on items for my Etsy shop, One Inspired Life Shop.  I also enjoy spending time with family and friends, going to the beach, encouraging others in their life journey and trying out new art mediums.

What is your current season of life right now & where are you having difficulties trusting God?

My current season of life right now, involves working full time, running a small business on the side and planning to start a family.  My husband and I just celebrated 5 years of marriage and I just turned 35 this month, so we are eager (and nervous!) to start a family.  With this exciting journey on the horizon, also comes difficulties in trusting the Lord.  As someone who has always wanted to be in control of situations, the desire to start a family requires me to surrender and trust that the Lord will provide us with a healthy child, if that’s His desire, in the timing that He chooses.

I could give you a list of things that make me nervous about starting a family and 95% of what’s on my list are things that are out of my control!  This season of my life is one that I know will call on me to surrender and trust the Lord in ways like never before.

Share with us a specific example of how and when God has met you when you’ve walked into the unknown with Him?

Last year, my husband was unemployed for a year.  This wasn’t something we had planned for and it was a time where I had to trust the Lord in various areas of my life. Financially, I had to trust that the Lord would meet our needs on a monthly basis to cover our mortgage and bills.  Emotionally, I had to trust that the Lord wouldn’t allow my frustrations of my husband’s job search to hinder our marriage or communication.  We didn’t know if he’d find a job in a week, a month or a year. I’ll admit, there were times I got frustrated with the Lord, but I had to remind myself that He had a plan and would open the right door.

In ‘unknown times.’ it’s easy for me to distance myself from the Lord, but I’m slowly learning that it’s during these times that He reveals Himself the most to me.  The Lord orchestrated such an amazing opportunity for both my husband and I out of this situation, even down to details that only He could have planned.

The Lord ended up opening up a new job for myself and my husband was able to back-fill my old position. It showed me the power He can have in our lives if we just trust and obey Him even when we don’t understand what’s going on.

We’d love to hear what step(s) out of your comfort zone you have taken recently or will take soon.

For so many years, I always felt that I was just going through the motions of life.  I was afraid to step out of my comfort zones for fear of being rejected, for fear of failing and for fear of what others might think of me.  As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that living life that way causes you to miss out on so many opportunities. How can we experience all that He has in store for us if we stay stuck in fear and stuck in what’s “known?”

When I started my small business, One Inspired Life Shop, I had to step out of my comfort zones.

I had to step out of the drive to be perfect.

Let’s face it, every item I create doesn’t end up in my shop.  There are definitely some ideas that just don’t pan out or I create a product that just doesn’t sell.

I had to step out of comparing myself to others.

It’s so easy to look at other small business shops and critique your work against theirs, leading to a lot of negative self talk.  What I love about having the Lord on my side, is the assurance of knowing that when I do step out of my comfort zones, I am never alone.  He is always there for me and will never leave nor forsake me.

How do you hear God’s voice most clearly? Is it a time of day, a place you go, a thing you do…anything!

I hear God’s voice the most when I’m able to sit still and be quiet.  It’s something that takes practice and doesn’t come easy for me.  I have to quiet the “to do” lists running through my head and keep myself from being distracted, but it’s when I’m able to be find that stillness, that God reveals Himself to me.

So much of walking with God on this adventure is about facing our fears, embracing change, and trusting Him…what is one of your biggest fears that keeps your paralyzed from saying “Yes” to God’s adventure for you?

One of my biggest fears is letting go and trusting that His plans are far more greater than anything I could ever plan or do on my own.  God has shown me time and time again, that my attempts at doing this thing called “life” on my own, just doesn’t work out well.  Yet, there’s still times where I’m hesitant to just trust Him completely.

I want to know what’s going to happen, how it’s going to happen and when it’s going to happen.  As I embark on adventures with the Lord, I’ve had to embrace His timing, His plans (even though I can’t see or know them) and trust that I’m in good hands.

And how do you overcome it?

  1. Journaling: It’s something that I don’t do enough, but I find that when I write about a struggle and my feelings associated with that struggle it allows me to see His hand through the whole process and the details that he orchestrates in my life.
  2. Having someone I can be vulnerable with and to do life with.  I’m generally an introvert so it can be hard for me to open up with others about what’s going on in my life, but I’ve found that there’s so many other women in the same boat.  By sharing and being real with others, we feel less alone in our own struggles and can help support one another along the way.

What does a life of adventure with God look like for you?

This question brings to mind a quote from Corrie Ten Boom which says,

“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”

A life of adventure with God for me, would be just that…never being afraid to trust my future to God!

And before you go…we’d love to hear how God led you to start The One Inspired Life Shop? What is your heart behind the shop?

God led me to create One Inspired Life Shop as a way to combine two of my passions. I’ve always enjoyed dabbling in arts & crafts and I’ve always had a passion for encouraging and inspiring others.  Being able to do both together worked out best for me in the form of creating an Etsy Shop.  I aim to create products that encourage people and remind them that they are loved, no matter what journey life has taken them on.

  1. Love your interview and Kristin’s heart, and I am so in love with the bracelets! Your question about how God is nudging me out of my comfort zone…well it’s very timely. I was recently asked to take the position of my amazing supervisor here at work, and each day as this change becomes more real, I become more panicky. It is (should be) a good change, and I know God is in it, but I really have a hard time believing in myself and picturing myself in this position because I had never planned it. Yes, I am a planner, and I was never looking in this direction, but clearly God was and I need to lean into trusting him now. Even good change that we choose to enter ourselves into can be scary! Thank you for sharing, Charissa and Kristin!
