Practicing the Art of Adventure :: Featuring Terrica Joy Smith

What does it look like to practice the art of adventure?

Every Friday we are featuring a woman who is Practicing the Art of Adventure in her daily life-stepping into the unknown, embracing change, trusting Him, leaving fear, and loving extravagantly, all the while, traveling deeper into God’s heart. It is our desire that through their lives and stories of adventure you will be inspired & challenged to say YES to God’s invitation to follow Him. No matter what season of life you find yourself in, may you see that everyday is an opportunity to practice the art of adventure as you abide with Jesus.

We’d love for you to join us here each week!

So…what adventures is God leading you into?

How can you practice the art of adventure in your everyday life?

I cannot say enough about Terrica! I have followed her journey for many years now and she inspires me in so many ways- to love my children well, to live intentionally in every season, to slooooooow down and practice Sabbath rest, to listen and watch for God in my everyday life, to be open for those wild things He whispers in my ear, and to say YES when He invites me into an adventure!

Terrica is a modern-day adventurer, seeking to follow Jesus in her everyday life. Trust me, you do not want to miss her heartfelt and endearing words to us today…they are just so good!

Join us for a moment as we sit with Terrica in her Victorian farmhouse and chat about saying yes to God, gardening, and gathering people around our table!

First, introduce yourself {tell us where you are from, your favorite place to go or favorite thing to do, and what a “normal” day looks like for you!}

Hi friends!  I’m a beauty-seeking dreamer currently doing a bohemian homesteading thing in the hills of Tennessee.  I spend most days chasing a three year old, garden tending, farmhouse cleaning, yard to table cooking, and dream building for the glory of God.

What is your current season of life right now & where are you having difficulties trusting God?

Currently we’re settling into a Victorian farmhouse we only recently finished renovating.  We’ve been more or less displaced the last year as the project took FAR longer than anticipated, but it’s been insanely wonderful to have a place to plant our feet again and this time put down forever roots.

Funny enough, I’ve seen God do such astounding things this last year I don’t have a problem trusting Him with BIG things.  It’s the little things that get me… sometimes as simple as trusting Him to get me thru the day without losing myself to chores and demands of motherhood.

Share with us a specific example {from the past} of how and when God has met you when you’ve walked into the unknown with Him?

A short while ago we said a very scary, very sincere YES to God.  To caring for the ‘least of these,’ whatever that meant.

And a few weeks later my husband received a stunning job offer, our house sold, we found our dream house tucked away on acreage in the hills outside of Nashville, and here we are.  All in less than a few months time.  We walked trembling into the unknown, and God unfurled a dream before us we didn’t even know we carried, a dream He seeded.  There is MUCH more to the story, but suffice it to say, we’ve been absolutely astounded by His goodness on vivid display. {Don’t miss the rest of the story here!}

We’d love to hear what step(s) out of your comfort zone you have taken recently or will take soon. {Big or small! It all counts as a step!}

Part of this journey for us means tons of practicing sincere and welcoming hospitality.

For a deeply introverted personality like mine, that can be intimidating.  But as with everything, God meets us.  He carries us.  He anoints us for whatever He’s called us to, and He’s already surprising me with finding such joy and fulfillment in this new season.

How do you hear God’s voice most clearly? Is it a time of day, a place you go, a thing you do…anything!

Whenever my mind goes to a not-chaotic, meditative state. For example, the shower, the garden, doing dishes, etc.  Those simple redundant moments when my body can go on auto-pilot my mind slows enough to hear Him.  Simple, yeah??

We way over-complicate hearing from God.  He’s always a whisper away.

So much of walking with God on this adventure is about facing our fears, embracing change, and trusting Him…what is one of your biggest fears that keeps your paralyzed from saying “Yes” to God’s adventure for you?

I can honestly say nothing really keeps me from saying “Yes,” because I’ve practiced it so much lately.  In the past the thing that kept me was not knowing the ‘how.’  How God was going to do whatever, provide whatever, or open the doors.

He has taught me with incredible gentleness and firmness that ‘the how’ is not my business.  It’s His.  The ‘what’ is my business.  And when I finally understood that and focused on the ‘what’, trusting Him to take care of the ‘how’… everything changed.  Everything fell into place in a way that utterly astounded me.

And lastly, what does a life of adventure with God look like for you personally?

Every. Tiny. Moment.  Appreciating the new blooms in my garden, the exquisite handiwork.  Marveling at my daughters laughter and attention to detail, her imagination and heart full of compassion even at such a young age.  Blackberries on the vine, kittens tumbling across my porch, the flavor of fresh garden herbs steeped in my tea.

EVERYthing.  Sunrise to sunset, all is worship, all is adventure…. if we silence the noise and open our hearts and minds to receive it.

How did Terrica’s words inspire you on your adventures…
