Practicing the Art of Adventure ::: Featuring Molly Vaden

What does it look like to practice the art of adventure?

Every Friday we are featuring a woman who is Practicing the Art of Adventure in her daily life-stepping into the unknown, embracing change, trusting Him, leaving fear, and loving extravagantly, all the while, traveling deeper into God’s heart. It is our desire that through their lives and stories of adventure you will be inspired & challenged to say YES to God’s invitation to follow Him. No matter what season of life you find yourself in, may you see that everyday is an opportunity to practice the art of adventure as you abide with Jesus.

We’d love for you to join us here each week!

So…what adventures is God leading you into?

How can you practice the art of adventure in your everyday life?

Happy Friday Friends! We are celebrating the end of the week by giving you a peek into the life of a woman who is trusting and traveling with God in the midst of her everyday.

Today’s interview is with Molly Vaden. I met Molly while I was back in the USA this summer. The minute I heard what she would be doing with her art of adventure journal I knew I had to have her share on the blog! She’s a wife, mama to 4, and has her own photography business.

Take a few minutes to sit down with Molly and I as we talk about her most recent step of faith, her biggest fear, and why she finds her current season so difficult. You will love her honesty and transparency. May you be refreshed and encouraged today, knowing you are not alone in this adventure!

First, introduce yourself {tell us where you are from, your favorite place to go or favorite thing to do, and what a “normal” day looks like for you!}

Hello my name is Molly Vaden and I am from Marysville, Washington. I am a stay at home mom to 4 kiddos and married to my best friend. My favorite thing to do is be with my family and go somewhere where we can be together without distractions.  I love a get-away drive to anywhere…adventuring around.  A normal day for me starts bright an early with kids up and getting ready for school and I never start without a good cup of strong coffee!

What is your current season of life right now & where are you having difficulties trusting God?

The current season of my life right now I would say is busy.

I am struggling to stay a float raising two littles, two teens, and meeting all the needs for each one.

Keeping up with the daily tasks that come with a big house, chores, meals, school, being a photographer, and all that’s in between is also challenging for me.

On top of all that, I’m trying to be a good mom and wife and keep it all together, when sometimes I feel as though I’m failing miserably on all levels.

Finding time to press into God and putting aside all the distractions can be so difficult.

Share with us a specific example {from the past} of how and when God has met you when you’ve walked into the unknown with Him?

In the past I struggled with finding my value in life as I stayed at home and raised my kids. Even though this was a sacrifice for our family financially, it has always been what I wanted to do. I believe that while its the most amazing rewarding job I’ve ever done, it is also the most challenging and heartstring-pulling job as well. During this time, is when I believe God showed me that being at home with my kids is where he wants me in this season of life.

I truly believe that God’s mercies are new everyday, and in that it has given me such freedom in life.  Knowing that even on the hard days, the days where I struggle to know if I’m a good mom or am doing it right, God says it’s ok and he’s given us a new day.  I find a freshness in him and it’s so rejuvenating for my soul.

Being with my kids is also where God revealed to me my gift of photography. My photography has been such gift, a way I can bless others, and I am so thankful for the opportunity!

We’d love to hear what step(s) out of your comfort zone you have taken recently or will take soon. {Big or small! It all counts as a step!}

In August after much planning and thought my husband and I decided that with the busyness of life we needed a family getaway where we could all be together and focus on what really matters. We decided that we would take our kids on a cross country road trip to Massachusetts and back.  I really believed and felt like God was telling me and showing me that this opportunity was now for our family.

It was one of the most special trips we have ever taken I really feel like it brought our family closer and stronger. I felt God with us the whole time and am so grateful for his hand over our lives.  During the trip I kept a daily journal for my kids so they could see God’s faithfulness. The trip really showed us and our kids about trusting God and depending on him. It also helped me to understand the importance of what I need in my life and what things I don’t. I hope and pray that for my kids it did that same, and that someday when they are older they will look back and see what it’s like to take a step of faith with God.

How do you hear God’s voice most clearly? Is it a time of day, a place you go, a thing you do…anything!

I hear God’s voice most clearly when I’m alone with my thoughts. Sometimes its in the shower, or in the car while the worship music is playing. Or sitting on my back porch in the sun. Or anytime I get to sit and be quiet, I feel God and hear him. I also think that it’s in little moments throughout the day when I turn my thoughts to him, as I’m making the kids lunch, or watching them play, or just thanking God for the life I have and the family he’s given me.

So much of walking with God on this adventure is about facing our fears, embracing change, and trusting Him…what is one of your biggest fears that keeps your paralyzed from saying “Yes” to God’s adventure for you?

One of my biggest fears is releasing all control and letting God take control.  Allowing Him to have every area of my life in his hands and fully trusting is hard. I think that giving your whole self to someone can be vulnerable and scary, but when you allow God to have your whole self is when he can fully use you.  This is something that I struggle with continually.

Digging deep in prayer and pressing into God help me to overcome my fears and say yes to Him!

And lastly, what does a life of adventure with God look like for you?

A life of adventure with God for me is where I give my whole self to God and daily asking him where he can use me and who I can serve or help. I truly feel the happiest when God is flowing through me and I am able to be blessing to someone else.

I hope and pray that I can always hear God and be submissive to him wherever he calls me.  Even in the daily task of raising kids and being a mom I know God has purpose even there!
