So…what adventures is God leading you into?

How can you practice the art of adventure in your everyday life?

Whether’s it was handing off the women’s ministry at her church, raising and homeschooling her four boys, going through a difficult journey with her first husband, or starting her own business, Mindy is a women who listens closely to the voice of the Lord so that she can live fully in the adventure He has planned for her.

Will you take a moment with me today and meet Mindy? She is a bubbly, lively, passionate friend of mine whom I met while attending my church back in Washington. Her interview today is full of encouragement, and her life is an example of what it means to practice the art of adventure…even when the adventure is laden with the most unexpected twists and craziest surprises! 

So sit down with your cup of coffee or tea, get to know Mindy, and hear about her wild adventures with the Lord!

First, introduce yourself {tell us where you are from, your favorite place to go or favorite thing to do, and what a “normal” day looks like for you!}

My name is Mindy Westfall and I am an Aromatherapist & Herbalist from Snohomish, WA. God gave me the absolutely perfect man (for me) and his name is Tim. He was the answer to much prayer and continues to lead me, and our children, to be more like Jesus.

I am blessed to be the mother of 4 AMAZING sons (15, 10, 7, 6) and just found out our 5th baby is arriving in December. (The next question explains why this is a complete surprise!) I homeschool my boys and run my business out of my home, which as you can imagine is very busy and no day is “normal.”

I am a very go with the flow type person and my boys are as well, so our day can be planned one way, and Jesus has the freedom to take us in a totally different direction. This usually happens when clients or friends come by for this or that and we end up with a full blown prayer meeting right in my office or at the kitchen table. We all love to see how God will choose to use our time and all the while still making sure all the little things fall into place!


What is your current season of life right now & where are you having difficulties trusting God?

The current season I am in is very interesting and needs some explaining…

God led me to begin the journey of becoming an Aromatherapist and Herbalist the beginning of 2014 and I officially launched my company Land of the Living Apothecary LLC in January 2015. And I LOVE it! This could not have been more of a perfect fit for my life, skills, passions and ministry.

Although this new chapter has come with many changes in our lives, one of the biggest was stepping down from leading the women’s ministry at Canyon Creek Church, which I had been doing for 4 years. It was a difficult decision, but I knew I was leaving it in very good hands. 

So with a growing and thriving company launched, my youngest son turning 6 and going into 1st grade, and my oldest starting his sophomore yeara…my husband and I began to dream and plan for what we thought the next few years would hold. During this time we also got invited to go on a missions trip to Mauritius this September.

To back up for a moment…in 2009 after much prayer Tim had a vasectomy. And this is where it gets interesting.

On April 21st, 2015 we found out we were expecting our 5th baby. We plan, and God laughs…


Already having 4 boys and having been prophesied over 4 times that we would have a daughter, we naturally assumed that this was indeed her! We very quickly adjusted our thinking to again having a baby in the house.

On July 1st we got another surprise when we found out the gender. Again, we plan and God laughs…

December 24th we are expecting our 5th son!

From planning an empty nest, to adding one more, and now planning to let God be God and have as many as he sees fit. Sometimes choosing to trust God and fully give Him control over a part of our life that we are taught to fully control can be scary. This is where I have to constantly remind myself of what the word of God says in Jeremiah 29:11,

 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”


Share with us a specific example {from the past} of how and when God has met you when you’ve walked into the unknown with Him?

When I was 20 years old and 9 months pregnant with my oldest son. My 1st husband contracted a flesh eating bacteria after only 11 months of marriage.

This ended with him having a double amputation of his legs, spinal cord damage to the extent of quadriplegic, brain stem stroke, anoxic brain damage, and a compound stroke on the left side of his brain. This left him unable to speak and with the mentality of a 2 year old.

Indeed, this was unknown and unexpected territory, but God faithfully walked me through this time with His grace and strength.

We’d love to hear what step(s) out of your comfort zone you have taken recently or will take soon. {Big or small! It all counts as a step!}

I am saying YES to God’s invitation, and traveling to Mauritius in September being 6 months pregnant.

I am trusting God with how many children he desires for us to have and really believing He will supply all of our needs.

I am continuing to take steps to grow my business and help the people God puts into my path.

How do you hear God’s voice most clearly? Is it a time of day, a place you go, a thing you do…anything!

I have been very sensitive to the Holy Spirit since I was young. 

Now as an adult, I am in a rhythm of communicating with Him in an ongoing conversation throughout my day, sometimes out loud and sometimes still and small.

He also talks to me to me through songs, people, and nature. What it really comes down to for me is truly listening to His voice. He is always wanting to speak. 

So much of walking with God on this adventure is about facing our fears, embracing change, and trusting Him…what is one of your biggest fears that keeps your paralyzed from saying “Yes” to God’s adventure for you?

I have walked though some HUGE things in my life, learning to overcome fear was one of them. So honestly nothing paralyzes me any longer, at least not as it did in the past. 

I have a passion to help others overcome this fear because I once was paralyzed by not just fear but sheer terror.

What are a few things that help you face your specific fears?

I have made it a continual habit in my life to…

  • Renew my mind. Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
  • Taking my thought captive to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5, “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
  • Focusing on the “whatevers.” Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”DSC_0526

And lastly, what does a life of adventure with God look like for you personally?

Embracing everything the Lord says is mine in the Word, not just listening to his voice but, obeying it with my whole heart {even when it seems strange!}, and NEVER letting fear hold me back!
