Alive To Her Own Adventure Feature: Christina Hubbard

On Fridays we feature a woman who is coming alive to her own adventure! A woman who is practicing the rhythms of stepping into the unknown, taking tiny risks, trusting God, and loving extravagantly right in her season. It is our desire that through their lives and unique stories of adventure you will be inspired & challenged to say YES to all of God’s gentle invitations for you to follow Him, and in doing so you will come alive to your own adventure!

My favorite part of these interviews is being reminded that God’s adventures for each of our lives are so different, but at the same time, no matter our season, He is drawing each of us deeper into the mystery + beauty of His heart. Today you get to meet my lovely friend Christina- a mama, writer, + adventure seeker!

Take a minute to join us as she shares her heart-a recent strange + risky step she took, what God spoke to her in South Korea,  two things that help her to hear Him more clearly, and what was birthed out of a season of feeling stuck and frustrated.

FIRST, INTRODUCE YOURSELF {TELL US WHERE YOU ARE FROM, WHAT YOU DO, YOUR MOST MEMORABLE/SCARY/BEAUTIFUL ADVENTURE, & ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE US TO KNOW ABOUT YOU!}

Hi, I’m Christina Hubbard. I’m a writer and creator of Creative and Free, mom to two squirrelly creative kids, and wife to a logical, well-grounded engineer. Originally I’m from Memphis, Tennessee and now live in Kansas City, which I fondly call the suburban prairie. If I could live outside, I probably would! It’s where I write, garden, take walks, do yoga, and dream. I also love epic road trips, foodie adventures, and country roads. My favorite place to go is a lake by my house. I take my Irish setter there once a week and listen to the waves lapping (it’s the closest thing to the ocean here in Kansas). I’m both a contemplative thinker and a people lover so I live in this messy tension of wanting to be with my kids and friends all day, but I’m always looking for quiet pockets of life in which to write.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT SEASON OF LIFE RIGHT NOW & WHERE ARE YOU HAVING DIFFICULTIES TRUSTING GOD?

I’m in a season of learning to embrace my place. My personality type is always dreaming of the next best thing (or so it seems): trips, career, home, even friendships. Feeling rooted where we live currently has been such a process.

Sometimes God works much more slowly and in different ways than I would choose. I find it hard to let go of expectations I have on myself and others. Gratitude and intentionality-these are the spiritual disciplines I’m trying to absorb into my heart right now.

SHARE WITH US A SPECIFIC EXAMPLE OF HOW AND WHEN GOD HAS MET YOU WHEN YOU’VE WALKED INTO THE UNKNOWN WITH HIM?

Last year I stopped four years of homeschooling to pursue writing more seriously. I wrestled with the decision for months, trying to make two things I loved work perfectly. Why would we mess up such a good thing? But I was strung out and anxiety-ridden-stuck in every sense of the word. I wasn’t writing much, simultaneously dealing with chronic pain, and I was a pretty awful mother. I’m so thankful I had a friend who invited me to take a personal retreat at her home in South Korea. A half a world away from home God reminded me I am His beloved child and I don’t have to do anything to prove myself to Him. Soon after, He gave me the faith to step out into this uncertain journey.

WE’D LOVE TO HEAR WHAT STEP(S) OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE YOU HAVE TAKEN RECENTLY OR WILL TAKE SOON.

A few months ago I was longing to meet and build relationship with fellow writers. I invited a group of women whom I barely knew from church to meet together. It had been a long time since I’d led a group of any kind-it felt strange and risky, but I did it.

We met together, and it feels so good to have a place to talk words and Jesus. I gained new friends and a deeper sense of connection.

HOW DO YOU HEAR GOD’S VOICE MOST CLEARLY? IS IT A TIME OF DAY, A PLACE YOU GO, A THING YOU DO…ANYTHING!

I hear God’s voice most clearly when I am moving my body and enjoying nature. Sometimes I’m walking around the track at the park, doing yoga on my deck, or vacuuming. (In fact, all my best ideas come during housework, go figure!)  God often talks to me when I’m on the road and listening to music. I get this on our family roadtrips or visiting a friend across town for coffee.

So much of walking with God on this adventure is about facing our fears, embracing change, and trusting Him…what is *one* of your biggest fears that keeps your paralyzed from saying Yes to God’s adventures for you?

I’m terrified of making the wrong choice. When I go to the grocery store, there might be five types of tomato sauce, and I’m the type of person who needs to pick up each one and read the label for the perfect flavor and price. When there’s too many options, I get paralyzed. I’m learning I work better when I just choose something and move. I save time, energy, and mostly, everything works out beautifully, even the tomato sauce!

AND HOW Do YOU OVERCOME THAT SPECIFIC FEAR?

I’ve been transformed by the practice of the Examen Prayer this year, which is based on St. Ignatius’ prayer of reflecting on your day and seeing when you were close to God and when you were not. Socrates said, “The unexamined life isn’t worth living.” I use an app called Pray As You Go and another called Examen Prayer. There’s a deep richness in this type of contemplative prayer. It centers me on the fact that God loves me, which is fresh news every morning.

Tsh Oxenreider’s Upstream Field Guide is another awesome resource I’ve used to learn how to let God use my strengths with clarity and purpose.

In all the recent life changes, I developed anxiety and found myself having a bit of an identity crisis. It’s empowering to remember how God uniquely designed me so I can give the world the best version of Christina.

WHAT DOES A LIFE OF ADVENTURE WITH GOD LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

Right now, a life of adventure with God means slowing down and savoring life in the midst a culture that is hellbent on busy. At the same time, I feel like God is pushing me to try new things like photography, speaking, and skateboarding. (It’s pretty darn fun!) My husband and I are saving up for kayaks for our family as well as a trip to Europe next year. Adventure is following God’s promptings to chase our dreams and never say, “That’s impossible.”

And before you go…we’d love to hear how God led you to start Creative & Free? What is your heart behind the blog?

I started Creative & Free because I was ready to get serious about my writing and start living the creative life for which I’d been longing.  It was a way of reaching out to God after that horrible stuck period and then testing him a bit.

I told him, “Ok, you’ve been telling me to write for years. What do we have to do to make this happen?” I’ve been someone who has struggled to find myself and overcome the noise and dark things in my life. The blog is where I tell stories to help others live with God’s courage. He is the one who gives us the imagination and the strength to live out beauty and truth. The cool thing is I get to figure this out along with my fabulous readers!
