The Makings of A Wonder-Full Life {4 Things You Can Do}

My son David plucks up slugs and stares in amazement as they perch on the back of his hand. Although I don’t necessarily need the slug, I do want what he has- a wonder-full life. Wonder makes even the slimiest moments, the birthplace of adventure.

Wonder is like whip cream on top of strawberry shortcake, it brings completeness and contentment, and adds beauty and sweetness as we eat up our ordinary days.

It is a mysterious thing, this gift of wonder, how it can slowly seep into our creativity, work, and routines, igniting a passion for the miniscule mundane that has lost its magic.

Wonder. The alarm clock of the soul, awakening us with urgency to step out and see the beauty of God all around us. So laden is every season with His presence, we would be fools to miss out on it.

But my wonder disappears in the clouds of worry. Anyone else? It hides beneath my hundreds of to-do lists. Maybe you too? Even if wonder was a sticky slug, it would still slip through my fingers.

I can’t seem to keep it around for longer than a brief moment. Where has my wonder gone?

Thankfully wonder is never lost. It’s delicately placed within our reach everyday like a cookie on the counter waiting to be snagged and devoured. Wonder tempts us to come and see the adventure in our midst.

Wonder isn’t reserved for boys who brave the outdoors, for the people with pretty yards, or vacations in Europe. Wonder doesn’t look like a superficial positive attitude about life. It’s not wearing a smile or speaking wow around every corner.

Wonder is engaging with and unearthing the God-woven story hidden within the patchwork of our days.

Perhaps you are weary, worn-out, or worried like I’ve been lately. The makings of a wonder-full life are within our reach today.

  1. Take 5 Seconds to Remember//

Remember the world of wonders he has made, his miracles, and the verdicts he’s rendered- O seed of Abraham, his servant, O child of Jacob, his chosen. {Psalm 105:5-6}

Go on a treasure hunt through your week, your year, even the last decade. How has God shown up or surprised you? When did He provide and keep His promises? You won’t need more than a few intentional seconds before you realize how wonder-full your life actually is!

  1. Create a Wonder List//

I’ll make a list of God’s gracious dealings, all the things God has done that need praising. All the generous bounties of God, his great goodness to the family of Israel- compassion lavished, love extravagant.
{ Isaiah 63:7-8}

Get out a piece of paper and a pen, and instead of writing out your to-do list, write out a what-He’s-done list, pages of proof that His presence is with you. Cement His wonders in your heart as a foundation for celebration even on the darkest days. God turns even the worst scenarios into a backdrop for His beautiful story. Don’t be like the Israelites who “were not impressed by the Lord’s miracles,” or  “soon forgot his many acts of kindness to them,” and “quickly forgot what he had done!” {Read Psalm 106}

  1. Thank + Translate//

Thank God! Pray to Him by name! Tell everyone you meet what he has done!
Sing Him songs, belt out hymns, translate his wonders into music!
Honor His Holy name with Hallelujahs,
You who seek God. Live a happy life! {Psalm 105:1-3}

The word for “thank” in Hebrew meant to lift up your hands in public declaration. An action that could have only inspired others to look to God and also stand in wonder. A wonder-full life emerges from the everyday mundane as we humbly declare our thanks to Him, letting Him translate it into a song for all the world to hear. Whether you lift your hands, shout hallelujah, write a song, paint a picture, or throw a party, your simple thanks leads others to look with wonder at their lives again.

  1. Live awake//

Keep your eyes open for God, watch for His works;
Be alert for signs of his presence. ( Psalm 105:4)

We all sleep walk. Eyes open but not seeing. We scurry through life, with our heads down, blind to the signs all around us. We are living in the chapters of God’s story, walking amidst His glory, and sadly unaware of actual location. If we live awake to Him, every minute oozes with too much possibility for us to grasp. A wonder-full life actually reaches out to us as we stare wide-eyed at a world full of His wonders. Set an alarm clock for your soul today and live awake in wonder.

“What a wildly wonderful world, God! You made it all, with Wisdom at your side, made earth overflow with your wonderful creations.” {Psalm 104:24}

I know Europe won’t be my backyard for long. My passport might hide in a desk collecting dust for a few years. My heart might ache to see new things and beautiful places. Wanderlust makes me want to go and get out.

But I’m choosing wonderlust instead. Practicing the art of adventure by staying in the sacred pathways of my ordinary life, traveling deeper into His heart, watching my son pick up slugs, and letting His story unfold in my wonder-full life.
